Dhaka Medical College is a medical college and hospital located in Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh. It is situated in the Bakshibazar area of the city, close to the University of Dhaka and the Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology.

Dhaka Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) established in 1946, it took about 10 years for the institution to get started after completion of government formalities. The Dhaka Medical College and its affiliate, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, were accommodated in a building constructed in 1904 as the Secretariat Building for the province of East Bengal and Assam. The building was transferred to the university of dhaka in 1921. One part of it was converted into the university's medical centre, another part into a student dormitory, while the residual part was allotted for use as the academic wing of the Faculty of Arts

This historical institution has produced more then 10000 doctors who has kept great role in society. Dhaka Medical College dormitory (known as Barrack) was the heart of the language movement from 1948 to 1952. Students of this Medical College sacrifice their lives for the Langugage movement. The Shaheed Minar for language movement was established within DMCH compound which was later separated. In 1971, during the liberation war many students and doctors of this institution took part directly and indirectly to the war.

Starting with only one building, Dhaka Medical College now consists of a college building with a new extension, an auditorium, a Nuclear Medicine Centre, male and female dormitories, burn units etc. scattered on about 25 acres of land. In 34 different departments and 42 wards - 234 doctors, 140 interns, 560 nurses and 1100 other staffs are dedicated to ensure 24-hour health services both in indoor and outdoor. The hospital now consists of about 2300 beds with a new academic and hospital building with a bone marrow transplantation facility rendering services to almost 3500 inpatients every day.

Role in national politics

The Dhaka Medical College has been involved in all the national movements of Bangladesh.

Bengali Language Movement

The college dormitories that were known as barracks were at the heart of the Bengali Language Movement from 1948 to 1952. The barracks were formerly situated at the current location of the Shaheed Minar. There were about 20 tin shed barracks where the medical students resided. Because they were close to the Parliament of East Pakistan (presently Jagannath Hall of Dhaka University), the medical dormitories were chosen as the center of the student movement. In the early hours of 21 February 1952, all the students of Dhaka Medical College gathered in front of the medical college dormitories. In the afternoon the group headed for the parliament which was in session. No procession was allowed due to the imposition of Section 144 (a section of the penal code that prohibited unlawful assembly). The students decided to defy Section 144 at 4:00 PM at the historic Aam-tola (which was situated beside the present day Emergency gate). The police fired at the procession, resulting in the deaths of Salam, Barkat, Rafique, Jabbar and Shafiur. After sunset on 21 February, at the site of the deaths, the students of Dhaka Medical College decided to build a monument. They worked continuously on 22 and 23 February and finished the construction, using bricks, gravel and cement reserved for the hospital.

Liberation War, 1971

Many staff and students took part in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, as fighters or in treating the injured.
